iPod Duelling

Spent the Bank Holiday Weekend re-acquainting myself with my old ‘hood in Ormy. Ormskirk, for those of you who don’t know, is a small one-horse town in Lancashire and where I’m from. In fact, it’s no longer even a one horse town, the last one there having died from boredom some time ago. So, rather than face the monotony of another night in the ropey old Queens fending off Harry Potter jibes (”Ey! Ey! Fancy a game a Quidditch mate?!”) I decided a night out in Liverpool was called for and recruited the gang for a night on the tiles. In an effort to avoid the day-glo tan crowd, falling drunkenly into some twat-encrusted style bar or The Docker’s Fists, for once in my life I planned ahead and found some bars I could bear to be in without wishing to embark on a professsional self-harming career.
We ended up in one called Korova, which I think is owned by the Ladytron folk (or started by them or perhaps some more tenuous connection). Sitting down I noticed a mixing desk with no record decks, but lots of ipods, and a scrappy bit of paper. Thinking more about finishing the drink in my hand, I didn’t reconsider this until I realised how decent most of the music was. I then realised people were choosing it themselves! That’s right, take your iPod (or less heavily marketed mp3 player of your choice), get it past quality control (I asked how they made sure no-one played Razorlight; “Because I can be a real bitch!” was the response), scribble it down then get it played. Brilliant! I went and got my iPod from the Batmobile and set about imposing my tastes on everyone. I played:
- Clor - Love & Pain
- TV On The Radio - Wolf Like Me (a toss up between that and Staring At The Sun)
- Be Your Own Pet - Adventure (not really suited to the other stuff, but like I say, this was my chance to impose my tastes!)
Although the odd song was a little obvious (probably including my own) most were great - I heard lots of new stuff and ended up actually feeling some camaraderie with the other people there. Most strange for an angry drunk like myself. The most annoying thing was having the nano instead of a bigger one, but now I can justify buying the biggest one possible (I need only dubiously legitimate reasons to buy technology).
Anyway, the night is Random iPod Duelling and anyone in Liverpool on a Sunday night should definitely go along, iPod or not.

They do a similar thing at Bring The Noise, last friday of the month at The Admiral. I think. They tried to get me their myspace friend but I am still undecided.

Hi! I’m glad you found RANDOM fun, interesting and empowered. As the ‘quality control’ who runs the night, it’s great to learn new opinions on the night and to receive feedback from fellow deejays. It really makes the 2 years I’ve been doing it worthwhile!
Korova has changed and we’re now on Wednesday nights, if you’re ever about we’d love to have you!
