Bike Demo Day, Glentress

Glentress, Scotland

For me, last Sunday was the best day of the year. Why? Because I tested over £20,000 worth of mountain bikes at the Glentress Bike Demo Day, that’s why! Organised by MBUK/Future, a whole load of UK MTB distributors got together and are touring the country promoting the new 2008 ranges . And what’s more, you can ride them on real trails, for free. Awesome. So, Dad Dave and I went along to ride some exotica. Even the sun deigned to grace us with its presence, so I cycled round in shorts and t-shirt feeling like a teenager again.

The event had a special test trail designed to take about 20 minutes and incorporated bits from the red & blue routes before finishing at the top of the freeride park. Starting with a fireroad ascent from the Buzzard’s Nest carpark to the first piece of red downhill (which includes a nice few tight hairpins, and gets a little rocky with the odd hump to pop off), it then goes up again for what felt like ages, then along a section of fairly flat but fast bermy singletrack on the blue which I’d never ridden before (and probably wouldn’t again). After that came the freeride park/essentials trail, which was a nice touch - if you’ve never been to Glentress this is definitely a highlight, particularly the Cycopath (excuse the shit music).

During the day I rode some great bikes from Foes, Yeti, LaPierre, Felt and Santa Cruz. What’s more, they spanned the range from heavy freeride beasts to nimble XC mountain goats, and ended up giving me a few surprises too. Anyway, I’m going to post about each in a vain bid to get some search traffic, so come back soon for my inexpert opinions on mountain bikes I can’t afford!
